Shine: Usage and Troubleshooting Guide
Welcome to the Shine documentation! This guide covers basic use of the Shine application, as well as essential troubleshooting steps to ensure a seamless experience on macOS.
Basic Usage
Shine is designed to enhance your macOS workflow. Once installed and properly configured with the necessary permissions, Shine runs in the background and responds to your input seamlessly. Ensure that Shine is running and active in order for all features to function as intended.
To create a snippet, click on the Plus sign in the interface. Give the snippet a name, select the trigger for the expansion, and then write the text that you want in the Snippet Content. Click the Save button, and the text is ready for expansion! You can use Shine to add your expansion to your daily routines, saving you hours by automatically expanding on common tasks.
There is no subscription; the product is yours. If an upgrade is required to adapt to a newer version of the underlying operating system, upgrade fees will be minimal for existing users. There is no need to do a full repurchase of the product.
Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing issues where Shine does not seem to respond or isn’t functioning correctly, please review the following common scenarios.
1. Required macOS Permissions
Shine requires specific permissions from macOS to function. If you did not grant these during the initial setup, or if they were reset, you will need to enable them manually.
Shine requires the following permissions to operate correctly:
- Accessibility: Allows Shine to control your computer and interact with the macOS interface.
- Input Monitoring: Allows Shine to monitor input events (such as your keyboard) even while using other applications.
How to grant permissions:
- Open System Settings on your Mac.
- Navigate to Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down and click on Accessibility. Ensure the toggle next to Shine is turned on.
- Go back to Privacy & Security and click on Input Monitoring. Ensure the toggle next to Shine is turned on.
If Shine is already toggled on but is still not working, try removing it from the list (using the minus - button) and restarting the app to prompt the permission request again.
2. Secure Input Interruption
If Shine suddenly stops functioning while you are working, you might have triggered macOS “Secure Input” mode.
What is Secure Input?
macOS has a feature called Secure Input that protects sensitive data (like passwords) from being intercepted by other applications. When a text field or application requests Secure Input, macOS completely blocks other background apps (like Shine) from monitoring input.
Common Scenarios:
- Opening the macOS Terminal or other terminal emulators.
- Typing into a password field in your web browser or system preferences.
- Running certain password managers or secure environments.
How to resolve the issue:
When Secure Input is activated, Shine will stop functioning. To get Shine working again, you must:
- Close the secure input source: Close the Terminal window, password prompt, or application that requested secure input.
- Restart Shine: Once the secure input source is fully closed, you must completely restart the Shine application for it to resume normal functionality.
Note: This behavior is an intended security feature of macOS designed to protect your privacy and data. It is not a defect or bug within the Shine application itself. Shine itself will show that a secure input source has been opened when you hover over the icon, the tooltip will let you know that this has occurred.
